Reginald Gammon Memorial Award
This award honors Reggie’s legacy. It will support emerging New Mexico artists working in painting and/or printmaking as well as emerging jazz musicians. It is administered by the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque, NM, a 501 c3 tax-exempt organization.

New Grounds Gallery has pledged a percentage of all sales of Reggie’s work to this foundation. Below are additional ways of how you can contribute.

This powerful painting, now in the collection of the National Afro-American Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio, has been featured in several books on African-American art and graces the cover of a textbook on civil rights history. The image is as relevant now as it was in the 1960s. It was inspired by the 1963 March of Washington, the pivotal event during which Martin Luther King submitted his famous “I have a Dream” speech.

Underscored by jazz music, we watch the artist paint and teach while listening to his thoughts on art, the civil rights movement and the role of Blacks in America. This energetic and insightful 15 minute film was originally filmed by one of Reggie’s students, Eugene Redden, and supported in part by a grant obtained from WMU.

The Harwood Art Center of Escuela del Sol Montessori is a 501 c3 tax-exempt organization; all donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.  Reggie had his painting studio at Harwood and was an integral part of this community for thirteen years.

How to apply for the award: Applications for the first round of award funding will be available in the fall of 2006 and the deadline for submissions will be Reggie’s birthday, March 31st, 2007.  Future cycles will follow the same schedule.
